Buying everything organic is ideal, but it's not always feasible on a family budget. The good news is that not all conventionally grown products are equally contaminated with pesticide residues. Why these and not others? Several common reasons: thin or absent skin that doesn't protect against pesticide penetration (strawberries, blueberries), need for many treatments during growth due to pest vulnerability (apples, peaches), consumption of the outer part without peeling.

The Clean Fifteen: where organic is less critical

The limits of these lists: what they don't tell you

The EWG lists describe residues present, not always the risk to human health. A pesticide with many detectable residues but very low toxicity could be less problematic than another with few residues but high toxicity. Real risk assessment requires considering both the quantity and specific toxicity of each substance.

Additionally, the lists are based on American data that doesn't perfectly match the European situation, where some substances banned in the USA are still authorized and vice versa. European EFSA data is the most accurate reference for Italian consumers.

Washing reduces residues but doesn't eliminate them
