It's the hundred-billion-dollar question: is organic food really worth paying more for? For years, official health authorities gave cautious, almost negative answers. Then research accumulated enough data for meta-analyses across tens of thousands of samples. The conclusions are more nuanced than either side's marketing wants to admit.

In 2014, researchers from Newcastle University (UK) published a meta-analysis of 343 peer-reviewed studies in the British Journal of Nutrition comparing the nutritional content of organic and conventional foods. What doesn't change: macronutrients and calories

Documented differences concern micronutrients (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals in minimal amounts) and contaminants (pesticides, heavy metals), not macronutrients. An organic tomato and a conventional one have virtually the same calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. The differences are in the qualitative profile, not the energy content.

The boundary: certified organic vs. de facto organic

A small farmer who doesn't use pesticides but lacks organic certification (too expensive and bureaucratic for small operations) may produce something qualitatively superior to industrial organic. Certification is an imperfect tool: it certifies the method, not absolute sensory or nutritional quality. Direct relationships with producers, knowledge of practices, seasonality: these are factors that certification alone doesn't capture.
