Vermicomposting is the biological process in which worms digest organic waste and transform it into worm humus (worm castings): one of the most concentrated and biologically active natural fertilizers available. Unlike traditional composting (which requires outdoor space and months of waiting), vermicomposting can happen in an apartment, in a space of 50x50 cm, produces no bad odors if managed correctly, and yields mature compost in 4-8 weeks instead of 6-12 months.

California red worms: the stars of the show

Not all worms are suitable for vermicomposting. California red worms (Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei) are the species of choice: they are epigeic (they live in the surface layers of soil rich in organic matter, not deep underground), tolerate high densities (up to 10,000 worms per m² in a worm bin), reproduce rapidly (they double their population in 3-6 months under optimal conditions), produce castings extremely rich in nutrients, and are resistant to moderate temperature variations. A starter colony of 500 grams of worms (approximately 500-1,000 individuals) is enough to start a worm bin for a family of 2-3 people. They can be purchased online or at specialized garden centers for €15-30 per 500g.

The worm bin: how to build it

A worm bin can be purchased (multi-layer models like the Worm Factory or Can-O-Worms: efficient but expensive, €80-150) or built DIY with inexpensive materials. DIY bin: two opaque plastic containers of 30-40 liters with lids (such as food containers or trash bins), one inserted inside the other. The inner container: drill the bottom with 6-8 mm holes (for liquid drainage and worm migration) and the lid (for aeration). The outer container collects the drained liquid (the "worm tea": an excellent liquid fertilizer to be diluted 1:10 with water). Position the bin in an environment between 15 and 25°C: ideal in the kitchen, bathroom, or under the stairs. Worms hate heat (they die above 30°C) and cold (they go dormant below 5°C).

What to feed the worms

California red worms eat almost all organic waste, but they have preferences and limits: They love: coffee grounds (nitrogen, neutral pH), tea bags, fruit and vegetable peels (avoid citrus in large quantities), stale bread, leaf and vegetable scraps, cardboard and unprinted paper moistened (carbon). They prefer in moderate quantities: onion and garlic peels (mildly antimicrobial, toxic to worms in high doses), lettuce (low fiber, decomposes quickly and can create acidity), melon and watermelon scraps (too watery). Avoid: meat, fish, dairy products (attract flies, produce odors, risk acidifying the substrate), large amounts of citrus (acids stress the worms), oil and fats, carnivore feces. Always add a bit of calcium carbonate (agricultural lime or crushed eggshells) every 2-3 weeks: it maintains neutral pH and prevents acidity, which is the main cause of problems in worm bins.

How to harvest and use vermicompost

When one layer of the bin is completely transformed into dark castings and the original materials are no longer recognizable, it's ready. To harvest it without collecting worms too: move the mature material to one side of the bin, add fresh food only on the other side. The worms will migrate toward the fresh food in 1-2 weeks, leaving mature compost without worms. Uses of vermicompost: mixed 10-20% with potting soil for potted plants (extraordinary effects on growth), spread in a thin layer on the surface of the garden as top dressing, dissolved in water (1 tablespoon per liter: shake vigorously) for an immediate liquid fertilizer. Worm tea (the liquid collected in the lower bin): diluted 1:10 with water is an excellent foliar and root fertilizer.

500 grams of worms in a plastic bin on your balcony: they eat your kitchen scraps and give you back the richest fertilizer that exists. They don't smell, make no noise, don't escape from the bin, and reproduce on their own. They're the most productive roommates you can have. Try telling that to your landlord.

Troubleshooting common vermicomposting problems

Bad odor: almost always from too much nitrogen (too much green food) or too much moisture. Solution: add brown materials (torn cardboard, dry leaves) and aerate. Fruit flies: the food isn't covered. Solution: always cover fresh scraps with a layer of potting soil or damp cardboard. Worms escaping from the bin: temperature too high or too low, or substrate too acidic (add calcium) or too wet. Worms escaping at night if disturbed: normal during the initial adjustment period. Dead worms: excessive temperature (above 30°C: move to a cool place), excessive acidity (add crushed eggshells), too much meat or citrus. If the colony collapses unexpectedly: contact the worm supplier for diagnosis.

Vermicomposting in schools: an excellent educational project

Vermicomposting in the classroom is one of the most effective educational projects for environmental education: the worms are visible, interactive, produce results in weeks (timeframes suited to children's attention spans), and teach the waste cycle and plant nutrition in a concrete, not abstract way. A worm bin in the classroom costs less than €30 and requires 10 minutes a week of care. Many Italian schools have adopted this activity with great educational success. The LIFE PREPAIR project (funded by the EU) promoted vermicomposting in schools in the Po Valley as an environmental education initiative.

How many worms you need: calculation for your family

A rule of thumb: 1 kg of worms for 1 kg of organic waste per week. A family of 4 produces about 3-4 kg of organic waste per week: you need 3-4 kg of worms (approximately 3,000-4,000 individuals). This sounds like a lot, but worms reproduce: start with 500g (the minimum starter) and in 6-12 months the colony reaches optimal size. In the meantime, feed with less material than your waste production (freeze the excess or use separate collection for what the colony can't yet process).
