Who are the Italian woodpeckers

Six species of woodpeckers live in Italy, all protected by law. The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is the most common and widespread, found in almost all Italian forests from the plains to the mountains. It's about the size of a blackbird, with a black-and-white back and bright red on the undertail (and on the crown in males).
