There's an animal that crosses the forest at night with the speed of a cat and the agility of a squirrel, leaping between branches 10 meters high with barely a sound, and by day sleeps in a tree cavity that few would ever find. The pine marten. And then there's its cousin — more urban, more adaptable, more often found in farmhouses and under car hoods — the stone marten. Two animals that live alongside us almost without our ever noticing.

Pine Marten and Stone Marten: The Differences

The pine marten (Martes martes) and the stone marten (Martes foina) both belong to the Mustelidae family — the same as otters, badgers, stoats, and weasels. They're similar in appearance: elongated and slender body, short legs, long tail, pointed snout, thick fur. But they're easily distinguished by those who know what to look for.
